When the rotor turns far enough, the magnets align precisely with the cores of the drive electromagnets.

The system still produces a spinning rotor for very little current drawn from the battery. But we want the system to provide us with excess electrical power, so to achieve this, four additional electromagnets are added around the rotor. These output coils are mounted on a non-magnetic disk that can be rotated to adjust the gap between the field coils and the output coils. Like the rotor magnets, the output coils are spaced evenly around the rotor circumference at 90-degree intervals:

At this point, the output switch is closed and the strong current pulse is turned off, and then the switch opens again, turning off the output current. The output switch is closed for only three degrees of rotor rotation, and it is off again for the next eighty-seven degrees, but opening the switch has a significant effect. An open switch cuts off the current flowing in the output coils and this causes a large spike in reverse voltage, causing a strong magnetic field that pushes the rotor in its path. This voltage surge is rectified and transmitted back to the battery.

Rectifying every possible spare voltage pulse as described returns 95% of the drive current to the battery, making it an extremely efficient motor/generator. Performance can be improved by rotating a set of output coils to find their optimal position and then locking the disk in place. When properly configured, this generator has an output current that is eight times the input current.

Note that the cores of the "generator" take-up coils are much wider than the cores of the drive coils. Also pay attention to the proportions of the magnets, where the length is much greater than the width or diameter. The four generator windings are mounted on one disc, allowing them to be moved at an angle to find the optimum operating position before being locked into position, and the two drive coils are mounted separately and held away from the disc. Also note that power coils are much wider relative to their length than drive coils. This is a practical feature that will be explained in more detail later.

The DC input is shown passing through Robert's custom contactor, which is mounted directly on the motor/generator shaft. This is a mechanical switch that allows an adjustable on/off ratio, which is known as the "mark/space ratio" or if the period is "on". Of particular interest is the “duty cycle”.
