Lighting in the bedroom: standards, requirements, nuances, photo ideas

Norms and requirements

In accordance with the requirements of SanPiN 2.2.1/2.1.1.1278-03 and SP 52.13330.2011, the level of lighting in the bedroom will differ significantly depending on the functional area in which it is located:

  • for the bedroom, the level of general lighting should be at least 150 - 200 Lux;
  • in places of increased visual stress, for example, near the dressing table, the level should be at least 300 Lux;
  • if you install a table in the bedroom where you work with documentation or do handicrafts, you must provide illumination of 300 - 500 lux;
  • for decorative lighting in the bedroom, 20 - 30 lux will be enough.

In addition, when arranging bedroom lighting devices, it is necessary to be guided by design requirements:

  • It is recommended to place lighting switches at a height of 0.8 to 1.7 m in accordance with clause 6.6.31 of PU E. However, in children's rooms, the height of the switch should be about 1.8 m.
  • We also note that the key switch should be installed at the entrance from the side of the door handle in accordance with clause 7.1.51 of the PUE .
  • To protect against electric shock in emergency situations, the housing of lighting devices and structural conductive elements must be connected to protective grounding in accordance with the requirements of clause 1.7.51 of the PUE .
  • Connection to the network can be made through a terminal connection, soldering or crimping in accordance with clause 2.1.21 of the PUE ; it is prohibited to connect network elements by twisting

Please note that the color temperature of the lamps should be in the warm spectrum, from 2500 to 4000 K. If you neglect this rule, then cold light will increase a person’s tension, which can cause insomnia to appear when falling asleep.

Types of modern lamps for the bedroom

When decorating a bedroom, designers advise choosing at least two types of lighting. This will help create a general light of moderate intensity, which will optionally work during the day and evening.

There are many options for organizing lighting using various lamps.

Ceiling chandeliers and lamps

Chandeliers and lamps are a classic option for organizing central lighting in the bedroom. Ceiling units are usually intended for spacious rooms with high ceilings.

A variety of materials are used to decorate them: from wood to crystal.

It is best to give preference to matte shades, since the light through them will not seem overly bright.

When decorating modern bedrooms in Scandinavian or neoclassical style, you can give preference to metal and textile lampshades.

Wall sconces

Wall lamps are one of the leading trends in interior design. Their demand is explained by the fact that sconces are quite compact, do not take up much space and provide enough light for a certain area in the bedroom.

All models are equipped with original shades, which are made of glass, plastic, and chrome steel.

Wall sconces can be located on the sides of the bed or next to the front door. Also, these lamps can be placed near armchairs, providing the ability to read in the evening.

Desk lamp

Table lamps are installed on bedside tables or coffee tables. These lighting fixtures have a durable and wide base with a light bulb and an elegant lampshade. When choosing a table lamp, it is important to evaluate the length of the network cable, as well as its quality.

Table lamps become a source of local lighting, which is intended for additional illumination of the bedroom. If necessary, you can work or read with them, since the lamps can be conveniently placed on any surface.

Floor lamps

Floor lamps are floor-type lamps in the form of a static structure located on a small base topped with a lampshade. The lampshade for floor lamps is made in the shape of a cylinder, sphere or cone.

Floor lamps are considered a good option for the bedroom, since they do not require installation: the designs are sold ready for use.

In addition, such lamps are mobile, since they can be moved to any place at any time, and they do not require cabinets or coffee tables for their placement.

If the bedroom for which you are purchasing a floor lamp does not have a distinct style, it is best to opt for a classic-shaped lamp with neutral tones . This choice will become universal and will look appropriate in almost any environment.

If the bedroom interior is made in a certain style, floor lamps can become a real decoration of the decor.

For example, floor lamps for high-tech bedrooms are distinguished by the presence of arched legs, chrome-plated metal and are made of glass or matte plastic.

For classic interiors, there are floor lamps made of wood, brass with traditional lampshades, decorated with fringe, etc.

Night lights

A separate type of table lamp is a night light, i.e. a light bulb that is equipped with a lampshade that serves as a light diffuser.

This is another option for additional lighting that helps create a calming atmosphere in the bedroom.

Night lights provide comfort when falling asleep, create a cozy atmosphere and are great for both a child’s bedroom and an adult’s.

The stores offer many options for night lights: from stylized options for children to strict and laconic ones for adults.

When choosing a night light, you should pay attention to the lamps. You should not purchase a lamp with incandescent lamps, as they quickly burn out and consume quite a lot of electricity.

It is best to give preference to LED lamps, the soft light of which will be fairly even and will not tire your eyesight, which is ideal for the bedroom at night.

Smart lamps

Smart lamps are LED lighting devices that have sensors, sensors and modules that make control more functional and simpler.

These models provide users with advanced options for controlling light sources.

Such lamps are part of the “smart home” system and make it possible to program the device using a smartphone based on iOS or Android.

A smart lighting system consists directly of a light source and a system that controls the device. LED options are used as light bulbs, which are complemented by various built-in sensors.

Using these sensors, you can set various settings and options for lamps, turn on the required level of lighting and create unusual special effects.

In addition, smart lamps have functions for changing brightness, a built-in light alarm clock, and the ability to automatically turn off.

On the Russian market, the Yandex service presented its own “smart home” platform, where various lighting devices can be integrated.

This will require smart light bulbs that work with the Yandex system to integrate them into the overall home management system.

The light bulbs need to be connected to the Yandex application, after which the user will be able to turn them on and off using a smartphone, set activation and shutdown timers, change the color temperature, and create lighting scenes for specific situations, for example, for work or leisure.

Lighting nuances

Depending on the purpose of the bedroom, its lighting design may differ significantly. The most distinguishing criterion will be the age category of the person for whom the room is being arranged.

In the children's bedroom

In addition to the bed, the child’s bedroom usually contains toys, a table for drawing, or a full-fledged place for doing homework. Therefore, the lighting of each zone must take into account the characteristics of the actions being performed. To create the main light flux, you can use a chandelier or point sources. In the play and sleeping area, you can install wall sconces, soffits or spots, and illuminate the table with a table lamp.

In a nursery, not only artificial lighting, but also natural lighting plays an important role. Therefore, by placing the study table and play area near the window, you can save on energy bills during the daytime.

When choosing lighting devices, be sure to check their environmental compliance so that during operation they do not emit unpleasant odors and harmful substances. The shape and design of the lamps are selected without lagging or hanging elements, preferably small in size, so that children do not damage them and do not injure themselves during active games. For safety reasons, avoid models with glass shades or sharp metal edges. The installation height should be such that a small child cannot reach it.

All lamps must have a good color rendering coefficient - at least 80. The bulb bulbs must be securely covered with a lampshade so that if the glass burns out, it does not pose a threat to the child. Please note, never use fluorescent lamps due to their mercury content.

In the bedroom where adults sleep

Compared to a child’s bedroom, the space here should also be divided into several functionally distinct zones:

  • ceiling chandelier for general lighting;
  • bedside lamps for the area at the head;
  • table lighting;
  • decorative lighting for ceilings, furniture, etc.

For ease of use, it is better to power all lighting devices from different switching devices. This will allow you to create the desired lighting effect, with soft illumination or directional flow. If you are installing only one lamp to decorate your bedroom, you can use a dimmer to adjust the brightness of the light. But note that when LED lamps are included in the circuit, to adjust the brightness of their glow, you must select only dimmable LED lamps.

Since the bedroom is a place for physical and mental relaxation, all lighting fixtures in it should have calm tones. It is advisable to abandon bulky crystal structures, which are more suitable for the living room. If you have several devices, it is worth choosing them in the same design style.

Important rules for bedroom lighting design

  • achieve soft light due to the scattering effect, avoiding bright light spots;
  • use lighting fixtures that match in style;
  • effectively use the capabilities of the LED strip;
  • strive to create a harmonious composition of light fluxes from different sources;
  • consider options for controlling and adjusting each layer of light;
  • use the potential of reflected and hidden glow.

Selection of lighting fixtures

To illuminate the bedroom, you can find a fairly large number of devices: chandeliers, spotlights, floor lamps, table lamps, sconces, etc. Therefore, next we will look at how to navigate the available diversity.

Chandelier

The central chandelier can be designed with a diffused flow, or it can have an upward or downward direction. Diffuse lighting in the bedroom will create a cozy interior, while downward flow will act as a functional one. If the chandelier shades direct light to the ceiling, this visually increases the height of the room, and in the case of glossy stretch ceilings it creates an interesting reflection effect.

Depending on the height of the location, there are ceiling-mounted, built-in and suspended models. Each of them is suitable for one or another type of electric lamp, so installing powerful incandescent light bulbs near the ceiling is not recommended. Due to the strong heat, it will cause blackening, warping or other unpleasant effects on the bedroom ceiling.

Sconce

Bedside sconces have long been the highlight of the bedroom, which is why they can be found so often in interior design. But, in addition to the bedside area, they can just as well be placed near the table instead of table lamps, near a mirror, etc. Either way, they help add a touch of romanticism to any corner of the room.

According to the direction, wall lamps can be divided into models with:

  • luminous flux directed upward - they help to visually raise the ceiling, but they provide little useful light for reading;
  • downward light - visually lowers the ceiling in the bedroom, but perfectly illuminates the area you need;
  • rotating - allow you to change the illuminated area depending on current needs;
  • with diffused flow – designed for lighting design, can be used as a night light.

Spots

In the bedroom, it is effective to install spotlights as ceiling or wall lamps near functionally significant areas. For example, near a mirror or dressing table, they will allow you to redirect the light to a position convenient for you; they can be deployed above the bed for one of the spouses while sleeping, while the other requires lighting.

LED lights

LED strip can be installed to fulfill almost any need - it can be used to organize niche lighting, decorative bed decoration, and functional lighting of a certain area. Here everything depends on the power and intensity of illumination of the LED strip - for basic lighting you need more powerful models, for decoration - weaker ones. But most often, they are used to highlight the contours of suspended and suspended ceilings, where RGB stripes look especially interesting in ceiling niches.

Spot lighting

Soffits act as local lighting sources that allow you to highlight both individual parts of the room and provide full lighting around the entire perimeter. Spotlights have directional light, but when installed en masse they can easily replace a central ceiling chandelier, which is especially effective in bedrooms with low ceilings.

Selecting the type of lamp lighting

The right choice of lighting type will create comfort in the bedroom:

  • diode strips;
  • LED lamps;
  • energy-saving lamps.

All three types have specific characteristics and create a different interior in the bedroom. Proper use of lamps will help achieve a cozy atmosphere

Diodes

It is recommended to do bedroom lighting with LED strips carefully. The abundance of all kinds of variations and colors of these devices confuses, and subsequently turns the bedroom into a futuristic room, not very suitable for sleeping. Careful use of LEDs will help maintain an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility. For the bedroom, it is recommended to select lamps with a warm glow, not too bright and not too colored. Ribbons stretched along the contours of the ceiling look impressive. Sometimes LED lighting under the bed looks harmonious. This kind of lighting looks good in a modern style bedroom. And installing luminous strips in a classic interior threatens not only the loss of comfort, but also the complete destruction of the design.

LED

Bedroom lighting using LED lamps is very common. They, like tapes, have brightness and power adjustments. The main difference is precisely the pinpointness of such light sources. More often, LED lamps are mounted in walls or ceilings at certain intervals. The result is distributed lighting with a classic design, with a futuristic cool light.

Energy-saving lamps

Energy-saving lamps have become a part of our lives, displacing unprofitable incandescent lamps. Now they are used everywhere: classic chandeliers, innovative built-in lamps, etc. According to the recommendations of professionals, it is best to use energy-saving lamps in chandeliers or sconces.

Energy-saving lamps do not tolerate high humidity, so installing them in suspended ceilings is undesirable.

How to position the lamps correctly?

In relation to ceiling lighting, the chandelier should be placed strictly in the center of the ceiling, regardless of the location of the furniture below it. But if you provide lighting with spotlights, then their arrangement can be either symmetrical or in any unusual design for local illumination of a certain area, for example, in the place where the bed will be installed.

Regarding distances, the recommended height is:

  • for a ceiling lamp - 215 - 230 cm from the floor, but here it is important to take into account the height of the person who will sleep or relax on the bed;
  • bedside lamps can be placed on side tables, slightly to the side of the bed or directly above it, but the latter option is not the most convenient for a couple.
  • the mirror and the adjacent area can be illuminated from above or from the sides, but in no case should you direct the light into a reflective surface, otherwise it will blind you.

Which lamps to choose for the bedroom interior

The model of the lamp chosen for the bedroom should also be based on the general style of the room. It is important to take into account the overall concept of the bedroom and pay attention to individual details such as the color of furniture, wallpaper, decor, etc.

For a classic style , a forged stained glass chandelier made in the format of a candelabra is suitable. The higher the ceiling height and the size of the room, the more massive the lamp should be.

For a high-tech bedroom, you should choose an unusual model made of glass, metal or plastic. It is worth giving preference to metallic or neutral shades that can highlight the modern style of the room.

Interiors in the style of minimalism are characterized by simplicity and conciseness. Designers for such bedrooms recommend choosing contrasting chandeliers that will be pompous and pretentious.

A crystal lighting fixture placed in the middle of the room works well.

If the owners are not ready for such experiments, you can choose a small ceiling chandelier, diluting it with additional lighting.

A bedroom decorated in Provence style requires an elegant and light chandelier made of ceramic or glass.

A model made in the format of a candelabra with candles and a crystal lamp would look appropriate.

The frame of the chandelier should be made of wood, metal or ceramic, and natural fabrics such as linen and chiffon are chosen for the lampshade.

In modern bedrooms, various chandelier options can be used. Most often, preference is given to lamps of laconic shapes made of simple materials.

It would be appropriate to experiment with LED lighting, through which the interior can be transformed depending on the time of day and the activities of the owners.

Japanese-style interiors place great emphasis on artificial lighting at night.

For this purpose, paper shades and frosted glass are selected, which can provide diffused and soft light.

Only ceiling lights are allowed (bedside lighting can also be used if required).

Japanese bedrooms are designed to be quite ascetic, and therefore it is not allowed to use the floor space as a platform for placing lamps.

For lighting, strict geometric shapes and light distribution along the entire perimeter of the room are used.

In the Scandinavian style, lighting is implemented through the use of multi-level light sources.

One central ceiling lamp in the form of a chandelier or pendant is selected, and the remaining areas in the bedroom are equipped with additional lighting. Floor lamps, lamps or lighting are suitable for these purposes.

It is worth giving preference to lamps with a minimalist design. It is allowed to use cold and warm light for different areas of the bedroom.

Types of lighting in the bedroom

When choosing a specific type of lighting in the bedroom, it is important to consider the feasibility and necessity of each type.

Basic lighting

The first thing you should organize lighting from is the general light background in the bedroom. Flat or pendant lamps, spotlights, etc. are perfect for its implementation. Here it is important to maintain a balance of intensity, and too powerful and weak equally poorly take root in use; over time, such options fade into the background in front of other types. One of the most effective ways to solve the problem today is smart chandeliers, in which you can change both the style and intensity of light.

Bedside lighting

Bedside lamps are designed for comfortable going to bed, reading a book or other manipulations. If the bed is intended for two spouses, then all lighting fixtures are purchased in pairs. However, their arrangement should provide soft light that in no way affects the adjacent half of the bed. For bedside lighting, wall-mounted floor lamps and classic table lamps with large shades are equally suitable.

Mirror lighting

To do this, you can use both artificial and daylight lighting by placing the dressing table near the window. Depending on the method of supplying the luminous flux, this area can be illuminated by spots, spotlights or sconces. Recently, side lighting using LED strip has become popular.

Cabinet lighting

It is a very convenient option, since local lighting of shelves or departments allows you not to interrupt the sleep of other household members, including lighting. Factory-installed soffits and spots have proven themselves to be excellent for these purposes. In the case of an already installed cabinet, you can mount an LED strip to illuminate it.

Decorative lighting

To decorate the bedroom and its individual components, you can use LED lighting. The scope of their application is limited only by your own imagination; it can be installed as a design option for a ceiling, bed, closet, or shelves. Spotlights, themed floor lamps, lamps, etc. are also good for decoration.

How to choose chandeliers

The abundance of varieties of chandeliers on the lighting market often makes it difficult to choose the right model. When choosing, it is recommended to determine the style in which the chandelier is considered, lighting capabilities and similar points. Based on these factors, the list of suitable models will be reduced. However, some subtleties need to be understood.

White chandelier hanging from the ceiling in a modern style

One of the trends in modern lighting fixtures is the white chandelier. Despite the fact that chandeliers are sometimes classified as outdated lamps, modern models continue to appear and prove the opposite. A stylish white chandelier hanging from the ceiling will highlight the modern design of the room without losing the necessary coziness. The light of such chandeliers is usually white, muted, spreading evenly throughout the room.

Ceiling chandelier for a small room

For a small room, the chandelier should not hang too low. And be too massive. An option would be a medium-sized chandelier with white shades, which will visually expand the space and highlight the comfort of a small room.

It is recommended to choose a chandelier that is not too large and not too small. It is advised to clearly measure the size of the room and the chandelier.

LED chandeliers, modern

The Art Nouveau style has already become a popular style for decorating apartments. Modern LED chandeliers have firmly established themselves in the bedrooms of a huge number of people. Rounded shapes, smooth weaves and pleasant diffused LED light did their job. Maintaining an atmosphere of modern comfort with the help of such chandeliers has become not at all difficult.

Chandelier for the men's bedroom

Men's bedrooms are characterized by laconicism and a rough style. The most common design of men's bedrooms is the “loft” design, which includes moderately careless, but at the same time elegant contours of objects. Chandeliers of this style are the same casual but stylish designs. Such lamps are used to illuminate small spaces.

How to choose the right concept and color scheme for a room

The easiest way to colorize a volume is with colored lamps, shades, lampshades or diffusers. It has long been proven that color creates a special atmosphere and affects mood.

There should be several switches in the bedroom.

A few observations:

  • Cool bluish stimulates mental activity, suitable for lovers of reading.
  • Blue creates a feeling of cold, recommended in hot weather. If there are thick curtains on the windows, such lighting will save you from the heat at noon.
  • Green natural shades are conducive to a relaxing holiday; in the middle of the last century, lamps with green lampshades were popular.
  • Warm yellow, close to sunny, causes an unconscious feeling of anxiety due to the discrepancy between the internal mood and the physiological state.
  • Bright red and alarming pink lighting increases the sex drive of couples in love.

Now shades of purple are trending; it is the color of meditation, relaxation, it has a calming effect on creative people, and helps to relax.

The modern market is replete with a variety of lighting devices.

Important! Colored lighting often changes the usual perception of objects, adjusts the space, and the room is perceived differently.

Lighting without a chandelier: what you should pay attention to

With low ceilings it is difficult to choose a chandelier. A good alternative would be ceiling chandeliers-screens, covered with thick textiles that transmit soft light. There are many prints and shades of the fabric that hides the LEDs, so you can always find the right shade.

It is recommended to choose the size of the chandelier according to the area of the room.

Variations of square and linear lamps in the bedroom will fill the room with light. Another option for the main light is an aluminum profile built into the ceiling with an LED cord. Such light in the bedroom will visually expand the walls and add airiness.

Spot lamps are very popular among designers for their simplicity and functionality.

There are other types of lamps that successfully replace multi-arm chandeliers in terms of illumination. The main thing is that all corners of the room are well lit.

To calculate the size of the chandelier, the designers came up with a simple formula: the length of the room is added to the width and multiplied by 10.
