How to choose a crown for drilling socket boxes: TOP-16 best diamond crowns

Even a person who has a vague understanding of construction understands that concrete or brick cannot be taken with an ordinary drill. For this you need special devices - diamond crowns. For their work, hammer drills, drills or diamond installations are used. The crowns will quickly and quietly make a smooth hole in the wall without nicks or chips. At the same time, they leave almost no fragments of stone and dust behind them. The price of diamond crowns cannot be called low, but it is justified by the quality of work and almost eternal service life.

Which crown would you choose or recommend for drilling socket boxes?

Take the survey

Recommendations for selection

First of all, you should clarify the dimensions of the socket box: as a rule, they are standard, but there are exceptions. In particular, if you need a hole of a larger diameter, you need to buy a 70 or 75 mm crown. The cost of non-standard options practically does not differ from the usual 68 mm, it mainly depends on the quality of the material and thread used.

But it’s better to make a big mistake and seal the cracks with concrete mortar than to try to insert a socket box into a narrow and unsuitable niche. For one-time work, it is allowed to use inexpensive crowns with pobedit edges. In this case, it is better to choose products from a domestic manufacturer rather than a Chinese one; the low cost does not justify the abrasion or knocking down of elements during the first drilling.

Products from Zubr or Praktika have good recommendations. They can last longer provided that they are periodically cooled while drilling into concrete and that the type of attachment matches the material being processed. This type of crown should not be used to create holes in walls with metal reinforcement.

For professional needs, it is better to choose high-quality standard SDS Plus diamond-coated tools. In addition to higher efficiency, they are characterized by the ability to self-heal and are practically not subject to wear.

Products from European manufacturers have good reviews: Makita, Bosh, Hilti. But the price of such crowns for making socket boxes is appropriate: up to 10 times higher than Russian ones. The number of segments for drilling also matters: the more there are, the more efficient and faster the concrete is drilled.

What to pay attention to

    Only a specialist can choose a crown correctly, but if the following rules are taken into account, a beginner can cope with this task:
  • Decide on the base in which the hole for the socket box will be drilled. Thus, for reinforced concrete, the nozzle for ordinary concrete, plasterboard or other materials is not suitable.
  • Specify the maximum drilling depth, as well as the diameter of future socket boxes, switches and other devices. Otherwise, it may turn out that the diameter of the hole does not fit the dimensions of the devices.
  • An important criterion when choosing a bit is the operating speed, as well as the maximum value of revolutions per minute of rotation.
  • Attention should also be paid to the need to cool the mechanism, as well as the possibility of doing without it.
  • You can analyze crowns from different companies.

When choosing a crown, you should not save, because a cheap product will not cope with the task at the same level as expensive analogues, and the socket may not work out at all. There are many fakes on the construction tools market, which can also be bought at a low cost.

Remember that sprayed crowns are very expensive, so purchasing one will be justified in case of a large volume of concrete work. It is irrational to take high-quality products if you have a weak and cheap hammer drill. This combination is extremely unprofitable, since drilling a socket box requires high power and high speed of the tool itself.

How to choose the right high-quality and reliable diamond crown for socket boxes

Construction stores and markets now offer a huge number of diamond bits from different brands, to suit a variety of preferences and any budget. Most people, when choosing a diamond crown, take into account, of course, the price. But first of all you should pay attention to:

  • internal thread;
  • size of the socket box;
  • what materials to work with;
  • what holes are you planning to drill?

It is better to give preference to diamond bits from trusted brands. For the democratic segment, these are the companies Zubr, Wolverine, Praktika, Diam. If you need a more powerful device for professional drilling of durable reinforced coatings, you should consider Bosh, Makita, Hilti.

General description of the tool

For sockets or plumbing pipes, the formation of recesses or through holes of relatively large diameter is required. In this case, you can work with a conventional drill in two ways. If you take a nozzle of the right size, they will have to destroy a large volume of material. Such a decision is not relevant for any reason. The second option is to make several small holes around the circumference. In this case, the walls of the opening turn out to be sloppy, and the middle has to be knocked out. That is, this approach also cannot be called simple and productive.

To solve the task, a crown for socket boxes is one of the most effective tools. Nozzles for working with hard materials are represented by three working elements:

  • base with two different tips: a shank for fixing the nozzle in the power tool chuck and a protrusion with an external thread for securing the cutting part;
  • a conical or cylindrical centering drill to hold the equipment while working in the exact place and the right direction;
  • a drill in the shape of a hollow bowl with a threaded hole at the bottom for fixing to the base of the nozzle and a cutting edge.

The main advantage of using a crown for a concrete socket is that the tool contacts only in two places during drilling. A small diameter drill forms a small hole, and the bowl creates a thin strip around the circumference. This makes it possible to relatively quickly create a seat for an installation box or make a through hole in a particular structure.

How to Make a Hole Using a Concrete Rosette Drill

https://youtu.be/epfsmdQZDf4

The strength of the material does not always make it easy to make holes using a crown. In this case, you can use a drill.

When performing work, follow the sequence of actions:

  1. Determine the center of the cavity and drill a hole.
  2. Drill a group of holes around the perimeter of the channel with a minimum gap between them.
  3. Clamp the cutter in the hammer drill chuck and make a hole along the previously prepared contour.

Unlike the first option, the edges of the resulting cavity will not have an increased surface cleanliness.

Professional pobedite crown SDS max

Professional pobedit bit for the SDS max hammer drill, the shank is made on a cone. This is a machine for those who like to make noise. Barbaric approach to neighbors. No class of concrete will stop it. D.BOR crown resource 250 sockets in concrete, aerated concrete about 500 shank broke (1500 rubles) with a new one another 250 in concrete - the teeth are all in place, wear is about 20 -30%, we can judge that the cost of one hole is about 20 rubles at its cost 10000, time 3-4 minutes.

Cons: Will not accept reinforcement thicker than 6 mm.

Design of nozzles for drywall

The appearance of drywall bits is similar to wood bits. They can also be collapsible or non-dismountable. The cutting part of the head is equipped with sharp teeth directed at a certain angle. A single-piece crown with a diameter of 68 mm is considered narrow-profile, since it is used only for mounting socket boxes. Using a set of hole saws with a collapsible attachment, you can cut holes with a diameter from 33 to 150 mm in gypsum boards.

Drilling drywall is very easy, allowing you to use any low-power drill. It is important not to turn on the percussion function while operating the instrument. This will lead to destruction of the gypsum layer of the sheet.
