All types and types of sockets for lighting lamps - marking rules and what are the differences

How is marking done?

The marking is a combination of a letter or several letters at the front and a number at the end.

The type is determined by the letter in front:

  • E – threaded type base (sometimes the name Edison screw is also found);
  • G – Pin base;
  • R – Base, which has recessed contacts;
  • B – Pin type base;
  • S – Soffit base;
  • P – focusing type base;
  • T – Telephone socket;
  • K – Cable socket;
  • W – baseless lamp.

Also, after these letters, information about the subtype of lamp that is used may be indicated:

  • U – Light bulb operating in energy-saving mode;
  • V – Base, which has a conical end;
  • A – Car lamp.

The letters are followed by numbers that indicate (in mm) the diameter of the base or the distance between its contacts. If after you see another letter, this is the number of contacts (s means 1, d – 2, t – 3, q – 4, p – 5).

Technical features of the T8 series lamp

These installations are perfect for arranging offices, industrial premises, commercial buildings, supermarkets and other types of stores. Today, lighting technology with built-in 4/18 W fluorescent elements is no longer as popular as before. In their place came more advanced and small-sized LED lamps T8 600 mm overhead type.

LED lamps T8 600 mm overhead type

If you already have 4x18 W fluorescent lighting devices, you can significantly reduce the cost of purchasing full-fledged LED lamps and upgrade old ones to T8 tubular diodes with a g13 base. During the manufacturing process of the product, matte or transparent polycarbonate is used to create the housing; a certain number of LED elements are placed inside.

T8 1200 mm LED lamps, the price of which has slight differences, are equipped with diodes in the same way. The devices have the required length, which is suitable for connecting to a 2x36W fluorescent lamp.

To modernize lighting installations, it is not enough to install a LED t8 model of the appropriate length; it is also necessary to reconstruct the electrical wiring in the equipment itself. LEDs have a direct connection system to a 220V power source.

Features and application of some types of lamp bases

Screw base E

The labeling of this group is quite simple. It includes the letter “E” and the designation of the body diameter. For better compatibility, you can often find special adapters that make the job much easier. The most popular sockets of this type are E10 , E14 , E27 , E40 . This subspecies is used for both incandescent and energy-saving and LED lamps. The most popular are the classic E27 and E14 . The largest type is used for lighting large areas - streets, parks, industrial buildings.

E14 socket: description, dimensions and other technical characteristics

  • The base must necessarily correspond to the size of the socket that is installed in the lighting device.
  • You should give preference to products from well-known companies, as their products can last longer than those from no-name manufacturers.
  • When installing LED lamps instead of classic light sources with an incandescent filament, you must choose an analogue in terms of luminous flux power. This information is indicated on the packaging, and there are also special tables.
  • A high-quality product should not flicker when illuminated. If this happens, then most likely there are problems with the device's control circuitry.
  • A frosted bulb reduces the light intensity by an average of 15−30%.

Characteristics of popular types of lamp sockets

Base E14

Everyone's favorite popular "minion". Suitable for many types of light bulbs, used for both decorative and regular lighting. It is most often consumed under incandescent lamps, since the energy-saving option is more expensive. Also, do not forget about the LED variety , which does not have the disadvantages inherent in the lamps mentioned above. Due to their compactness, “minions” are widely used, because they can be inserted into almost any lamp or chandelier.

Base E27

The properties are the same as the above-mentioned E14, differing from it only in its more ancient history of origin and greater popularity. Regarding versatility, both designs are almost the same, because in case of emergency there are a countless number of special adapters.

Base G4

Designed for voltage from 12 to 24V, the estimated service life is up to two thousand hours. Designed for very miniature halogen light bulbs, which play an exclusively decorative role in lighting.

Base G5

Unlike its smaller subtype, it is also designed for LED lamps. They are often used in a suspended ceiling for local lighting of individual elements of the interior decor of a room.

Base G9

They are distinguished by their operation without transformers; they are used in a regular 220V network. They are installed in many lamps and chandeliers, the lamps are usually halogen (then the base part is made of glass), but there are also LED variations (in this case the glass is replaced with plastic). They occupy the second most popular place after the Edison screw.

E40 socket: what type is it and what lamps are produced with it

  1. Power. In addition to traditional measurements, many manufacturers also indicate the area for which the light bulb is designed.
  2. Dimensions, shape. Not only practicality, but also cost and decorative components depend on them.
  3. Manufacturing company. It is better to trust well-known companies whose products have a reputation for reliability.
  4. Network voltage requirements. If the home's network does not match the parameters of the light bulb, it will have a bad effect on its efficiency and durability.
  5. Integrity. Before purchasing, be sure to remove the product from the box and inspect it for scratches, chips, or other damage.

Applications of E40 lamp, marking and bulb shape

Considering the wide possibilities, the lighting element with the E40 holder is used for lighting large objects: warehouses, retail areas. LED lamps of this type have replaced gas-discharge analogues of DRL and are installed on playgrounds and school grounds. They can be used as a light source in a hospital yard, kindergarten grounds, and administrative facilities.

Corn lamp for street lamps

Products in the shape of a candle or a candle in the wind are characterized by a small holder and less power (with an E14 base). This means that LED lamps of the E40 type are not found with this bulb shape. Light sources of this group exist in several versions, different in design: “corn”, model with a bulb. Moreover, the flask can have different shapes: cylinder, elongated cylinder, pear-shaped. The second option is available in transparent and matte versions.

The IP64 degree of protection confirms complete protection against dust and water on the body, in any direction and at any angle

According to the degree of protection, LED light bulbs with E40 holder are divided into versions: products with IP40, models with IP64. Such high-quality protection from moisture and dust is necessary in outdoor lighting conditions. When marking, the type of holder, luminous flux, lamp power, color temperature and designation of the light source are indicated.

Where is LED lighting used?

Lamps with different characteristics: type of holder, power source, bulb shape and power, which are based on semiconductor crystals, are used today to solve a variety of problems. In this case, the intended purpose of the light source is determined by a set of basic parameters.

Lamps with E40 socket are used to replace DRL lamps in street lighting. They are installed in lamps in local areas, on the facades of kindergartens and schools.

Thus, in everyday life, versions with a threaded base (E14, E27) with low power (3W, 8W, etc.), of various types (in the form of a candle, candles in the wind, mushroom-shaped, spherical, pear-shaped, etc.) are in demand.

Design solutions are also realized through a variety of light sources. It is allowed to use low-voltage spotlights and large 220V chandeliers. LED lamps are successfully used for lighting commercial, administrative, and public premises. But powerful light bulbs with an E40 socket can replace street counterparts such as DRL.

The only exception is the production sector, since LED light sources for such objects are used only when organizing an emergency lighting system.

Recommendations for selection

Lamps of the T8 series have recently become in demand in the technical market. The reason for this is an economical solution to the problem of replacing a luminescent part with an LED. In this case, the base of the light source is not subject to modernization. The LED lamp, according to the manufacturer, can last from 50,000 to 100,000 hours, which is equal to 20 years.

However, as statistics from household use of the device show, the service life reaches this value in very rare cases. This is justified by the purchase of low-quality LED parts. The service life of such devices is 3-4 years of intensive use.

T8 lamp design

In order not to make a mistake in choosing and buy a good product, you should pay attention to more expensive models from well-known companies. In addition, you need to determine for yourself the most optimal indicators of the following technical characteristics:

  • Luminous power

In case of replacing a fluorescent lamp with a T8 1200 mm LED lamp, the price of which depends on the light power, you must first decide on the color scheme. A product that produces brighter light is more expensive because the device contains diodes with high energy efficiency.

  • Ripple value

The indicator has a direct impact on human health. The coefficient should not be more than 1%, however, state regulations suggest limits that significantly exceed this number - up to 5%. Equipment with the second designation is strictly prohibited from being used in rooms where users spend a lot of time at the computer.

  • Colorful temperature

As mentioned earlier, warm shades of rays create a cozy atmosphere, cold shades progress in a working manner and encourage.

Connecting a T8 LED lamp

The connection diagram for diode installations in fluorescent lamps is considered quite easy and does not require any experience or labor. However, you should first carefully study the step-by-step installation instructions, since there may be several installation options.

Connection diagram for T8 LED tubes instead of fluorescent lamps

To simplify the reconstruction of fluorescent elements for a T8 LED lamp, manufacturers equip the base of this element with the same dimensions - G13. The installation system is fully consistent with the installation of conventional luminous parts.

To connect, you need to remove the starter from the fluorescent device and reduce the inductor, thereby ensuring a direct voltage flow to the tubular diode.

Parameters of giant light bulbs

The large bulb immediately attracts attention, but this is not the main difference between E40 lamps. A design feature is the increased diameter of the cartridge. If in standard devices the base size is 14 or 27 mm, then these light bulbs have a socket diameter of 4 cm. Such dimensions are explained not by the designers’ desire for gigantomania, but by working requirements, because these devices are closer in power and brightness to spotlights than to conventional ones light bulbs, so an enlarged base is needed for uninterrupted operation of the lamp.

Characteristics of E40 lamps:

  • power up to 150 W: these devices are 5–10 times more powerful than classic E27 lamps;
  • the base is screw-type, the lamp is screwed into the socket;
  • operating voltage – 220 V;
  • a lampshade in the form of an elongated flask, “pear”, “corn”;
  • type of flasks: transparent or matte;
  • color temperature – 2700–6500 K: glow from warm yellow to bright white.

What are the benefits of using LED lamps

To better understand the advantages of T8 ice lamps with rotary g13, they can be compared, for example, with fluorescent lamps. Due to the fact that the shape of the tube allows light to be sent in all directions, this allows you to save on the number of built-in diodes.

As for electrical indicators, after careful calculations it was found that LED lamps consume half as much electricity as fluorescent lamps. In this case, the service life of the former increases up to four times.

It is important to note that at low temperatures, HID bulbs operate at lower efficiency, while LED bulbs have a high level of efficiency.

E27 base design for light bulbs

At the bottom of the Edison base there are diodes that receive the signal from the cartridge. From them the current passes through two wires. Black is connected to the body, red is connected to the central pin. From them electricity is already supplied to the final destination.

In incandescent lamps, a plug is also built into the base. This is a special tube through which air is pumped out of the flask during production or inert gases and halogen vapors are added.

Cartridges with threads of any diameter are installed in lighting devices with a power from 3 to 1000 W. Edison's invention has become widespread due to the fact that modern technologies make it possible to connect not only bulbs with an incandescent filament to the base, but also various options for energy-saving analogues. Easy to manufacture, the lightweight aluminum body is practically not deformed and lasts a long time, which is also the reason for its great demand.

Types of lighting products

Ice lighting device T8 marked base g13 is not divided into any special types. The only differences between the lamps are:

  • tube length and size;
  • power supply of light fluxes;
  • brightness of light when emitting.

The light output varies over a larger width range. This allows you to use several different lamps in tandem. Different lighting powers can divide a room into separate zones, hide shortcomings and highlight advantages. The power of the light streams varies from 9W to 36W.

You can also choose the temperature when heating the lamp yourself. It is important to remember that at high temperatures the lamp emits brighter light, and at lower temperatures, on the contrary, it dims. The use of low-temperature lamps is recommended for use in utility rooms (corridor, pantry, elevator).
